RACE RECAP
Shane van Gisbergen delivered a historic performance in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, dominating the Viva Mexico 250 with a staggering 16.567-second margin of victory over Christopher Bell. The New Zealand road-course specialist led 59 of 100 laps on the 2.417-mile circuit in Mexico City, including the final 32 laps without challenge, putting on the most lopsided road-course victory since Riverside in 1979.
The race was held under tricky conditions with intermittent rain affecting the circuit, but van Gisbergen handled the adversity with poise. Ryan Preece surprised the field by capturing Stage 1 before SVG took command, sweeping Stage 2 and the final stage. Chase Elliott ran a strong third, followed by Alex Bowman and Michael McDowell in the top five. John Hunter Nemechek, Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, William Byron, and Chris Buescher completed the top ten across 14 lead changes among 8 drivers.
Van Gisbergen's victory -- his first since the 2023 Grant Park 220 in Chicago -- locked him into a provisional Playoff berth and announced to the Cup Series garage that the Trackhouse Racing driver is an absolute weapon on any road course or street circuit on the calendar.
