Toyota/Save Mart 350 Preview: SVG Gets the Chalk, Sonoma Gets the First Bracket Swing

The Cup Series leaves the spectacle of San Diego and walks straight into the first hard bracket test of the summer. Sonoma Raceway is not just another road course this week. The Toyota/Save Mart 350 is the 18th points race of the 2026 season and the opening round of NASCAR's In-Season Challenge, which means a bad day here does more than dent a box score. It ends a bracket run before it really starts.

Shane van Gisbergen is the obvious headline. NASCAR's official entry list has him back in the No. 97 Trackhouse Chevrolet, and he arrives as the defending Sonoma winner. Our FantasyJolt projections make him the top-ranked Cup driver for Sunday, projected for a 10.8 finish and 32.4 points. The catch is salary. SVG is $17, the highest number on the slate, and that forces every lineup to ask the same question: is the road-course edge big enough to pay all the way up?

The answer may still be yes, but it is not automatic. Chase Elliott ranks second at $11 and projects for more FantasyJolt points than SVG. Elliott has the road-course rhythm, the Hendrick floor and a salary that makes the rest of the lineup breathe. Michael McDowell ranks third, which is exactly the kind of Sonoma-specific ranking that should get attention. He is not priced like a punt at $13, but Spire's No. 71 has enough road-course signal to matter.

Then comes the group that can win the race without carrying the first headline. Tyler Reddick ranks fourth and leads our top 15 in projected points at 34.9. Kyle Larson is sixth, but Sonoma is close enough to home and close enough to his wheelhouse that a clean qualifying run can make him more dangerous than the rank implies. Chris Buescher, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney and AJ Allmendinger all sit inside the top nine, giving this slate a deep road-course tier rather than a single obvious stack.

The Trackhouse angle is especially important. Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez, Connor Zilisch and SVG are all in the field, and Sonoma rewards teams that can put braking stability and rear-tire life together over a full fuel run. Zilisch is the wild card. He is listed in the No. 88 Trackhouse Chevrolet, and the projection puts him outside the top tier at rank 23, but his road-course ceiling is higher than a normal rookie cameo. If qualifying moves him up, the salary conversation changes.

The race itself is 110 laps with stages at 25, 55 and 110. Sonoma's current layout asks drivers to attack elevation, wheel-hop zones and slow corners without cooking the rear tires. Track position is valuable, but the cautions and stage breaks can create strategy forks. Some teams will chase stage points. Others will short-pit and take the clean-air route. FantasyJolt lineups should not treat the final finishing order as the only scoring path.

The clean build starts with one of SVG, Elliott, Reddick or Larson. The sharper build decides which mid-tier road racer beats salary. Buescher at $12, Bell at $11, Allmendinger at $11, Suarez at $10 and Hamlin at $9 all have paths to outscore price if qualifying or strategy breaks their way. If the field overpays for SVG, those drivers become the leverage.

Sonoma does not reward pretending every road course is the same. This is a rhythm track with tire falloff, awkward braking zones and enough strategy pressure to punish one-dimensional lineups. SVG is the favorite in the conversation. The slate is whether he is the favorite at the right price.
