Love Holds Off Mayer at Phoenix to Take Championship Lead

Sunday, October 18, 2026

Jesse Love swept both stages and held off Sam Mayer by 0.128 seconds at Phoenix, taking the championship lead as Sheldon Creed lost ground with an electrical problem.

Race Summary

Jesse Love had controlled most of Saturday's Timberland PRO 200, but his second Phoenix victory still came down to protecting a few feet of asphalt. Sam Mayer reached the rear bumper of Love's No. 2 Chevrolet at the final corner, leaving the defending champion no room for a mistake. Love stayed ahead to the checkered flag by 0.128 seconds, completing a stage sweep and leaving Phoenix Raceway with the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series championship lead.

The race had begun with Love on the pole and Brandon Jones alongside him, before a brief shower complicated the opening stage. Jones stopped for wet-weather tires while most contenders remained on slicks, a decision that cost him a lap before his eventual recovery to sixth. Sheldon Creed used the outside lane to take the lead on the restart, but Love reclaimed it with six laps left in the stage. Creed finished that segment second, then suffered a dramatically worse turn during the caution: a kill-switch malfunction stopped his engine and left his crew trying to restart it on pit road.

With Creed losing three laps, Justin Allgaier became Love's principal challenger in the second stage. Allgaier led after the restart, but Love worked back around him and collected another stage victory. Corey Day took his turn in front early in the final stage, only for Love to regain control. Mayer, meanwhile, had driven from the rear after an engine change and reached second before the race's final pit cycle. A late caution during green-flag stops brought the contenders back together for a 35-lap run to the finish.

Mayer stayed close enough to keep Love under pressure throughout that closing stretch, then erased most of the remaining gap over the final two laps. Love held on after leading 156 of the 200 laps, with Allgaier third, Day fourth and Sammy Smith fifth. Creed finished 32nd, two laps down, turning a two-point championship advantage into a 59-point deficit. Love now leads Allgaier by 36 points and Day by 39 with three races remaining.

Key Takeaways

Love Converted Speed into a Complete Afternoon

Love's margin was tiny, but the work behind it was substantial. He collected both stage wins, led more than three-quarters of the race and earned 75 championship points. The win was his second of the season and fifth of his career, returning him to the track where he secured the 2025 championship. This time, Phoenix strengthened his position rather than ending the title contest.

"I would say it's a day we prepared for, not just dreamed of," Love told the NASCAR Wire Service. He credited the preparation around him and his pit crew's work, while acknowledging that Mayer appeared stronger at the end. That distinction matters: the dominant car still had to survive a sustained challenge after the field regrouped. Love could not rely on his earlier advantage once the last restart put Mayer directly behind him.

Mayer's Recovery Almost Became a Win

An engine change forced Mayer to the rear before the start, yet the No. 41 worked through traffic quickly enough to score in both stages. He passed Day for second during the final stage and was already Love's closest challenger before the last caution. The recovery therefore was not simply a late restart opportunity; Mayer had earned a place in the battle through the middle of the race.

The final run gave him time to pursue Love without another interruption. With ten laps remaining, the gap was roughly four-tenths of a second, and Mayer was close enough to reach the bumper at the last corner. He praised Love's execution afterward rather than blaming the finish on contact. Second place salvaged a difficult start to the day, although Mayer remains sixth in the championship, 86 points behind the new leader.

Creed's Trouble Reshaped the Standings

Creed's first-stage runner-up finish suggested he could defend his championship position. Instead, an electrical problem during the break transformed the race. The NASCAR Wire Service identified a malfunctioning kill switch, and the time lost while the team worked under the hood left Creed three laps behind. He continued, but only recovered to 32nd by the finish.

The contrast with Love's stage sweep was severe: one contender maximized nearly every scoring opportunity while the other spent the remainder limiting damage. Allgaier and Day also benefited by finishing third and fourth, moving ahead of Creed in the standings. Jones supplied a different kind of recovery, climbing back to sixth after his early wet-tire gamble. His result showed that an opening-stage setback could be overcome, but Creed's prolonged stop left a much steeper task.

Fantasy Recap

Love's 80.6 FantasyJolt base points made him the decisive scoring anchor. His 156 laps led added 15.6 points, and winning both stages supplied another 20. At $15, his return came from sustained control of the race as well as the victory. Allgaier added 59.8 base points with strong stage finishes, 18 laps led and the fastest green-flag lap bonus. Those are FantasyJolt totals, separate from the championship points earned at Phoenix.

Mayer scored 52 base points at $13. His climb from the rear was the race's clearest recovery story, but standard FantasyJolt scoring does not award place-differential points. Dean Thompson's seventh-place finish and one stage point produced 36 base points at $8, providing useful salary relief. Rajah Caruth combined ninth at the finish with two scoring stages for 45 base points at $11, illustrating why the finishing order alone does not describe the fantasy result.

Looking Ahead

The series heads to Talladega Superspeedway for The Progress Group 250 on October 24. Phoenix gave Love a significant cushion, but not a championship: three races remain in the nine-race Chase, and Allgaier and Day are still close enough to challenge. Creed faces a more urgent recovery after arriving as the leader and leaving fourth. Mayer's near-win also leaves a clear target for the next event: turn front-running pace into the victory that escaped him by less than two-tenths of a second.
