HighPoint.com 400 Recap: Hamlin Turns Pocono Into a Milestone

Denny Hamlin did not need Pocono to be sentimental, but the place keeps finding ways to make his wins feel bigger than the box score.

The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota started on the pole, controlled Stage 1, survived the late strategy shuffle and beat Tyler Reddick by 1.678 seconds Sunday at Pocono Raceway. It was Hamlin's third consecutive Cup Series points win, his fourth points victory of 2026, his eighth at Pocono and the 64th of his career. That last number moved him past Kyle Busch into sole possession of ninth on NASCAR's all-time Cup wins list.

NASCAR moved the green flag up two hours because weather was expected later in the Pocono Mountains. The rain never arrived. What did arrive was the latest version of a Hamlin run that has started to feel less like a hot streak and more like a late-career reset. He won at Nashville, won at Michigan, won the pole at Pocono, then made the track where he won his first Cup race nearly 20 years ago look familiar again.

The race was not a 160-lap parade. John H. Nemechek gave Legacy Motor Club its loudest afternoon of the season, leading a race-high 42 laps and finishing fourth. Kyle Larson led 24 laps from the front row and finished fifth. Tyler Reddick matched Larson's 24 laps led and came home second, giving Toyota the top two spots. William Byron finished third for Hendrick Motorsports after finding enough balance to stay in the fight.

The late wrinkle was Christopher Bell. Driving with a broken wrist from his Michigan hit, Bell stayed out on strategy and led 18 laps while the race tilted toward fuel and track position. For a few minutes, it looked like Bell might steal one with one hand compromised and the field trying to calculate whether to pit. The gamble faded instead. Bell slipped to 26th, a painful finish in both the literal and fantasy sense, but the run still changed the shape of the final stage.

Hamlin's day was cleaner. He led 28 laps, banked Stage 1, scored in Stage 2 and left Pocono with 59.8 FantasyJolt points. In the A slot of the perfect lineup, that became 119.6 points. The projection board had him ranked first before the race; the track result did not make the model work very hard.

The slate was won below him. Nemechek was the swing piece. At a $6 FantasyJolt salary, he finished fourth, led the most laps, scored Stage 2 points and produced 51.2 base points. In the B slot of the perfect lineup, that was 89.6 points from a driver priced like a punt. Larson added 49.4 base points, Erik Jones turned a $10 salary into 46.1, and Todd Gilliland won Stage 2 from a $4 salary before finishing 19th. That combination was enough to beat cleaner finishing-position builds that missed the laps-led and stage-point pockets.

Pocono often rewards patience, but Sunday rewarded precision. Hamlin had it from qualifying through the final run. JGR had the pit crew and the car. Toyota had four of the top six. And FantasyJolt lineups that treated Pocono as a track-position and stage-point race, not just a finishing-order race, had the right shape.
