Cuervo 300 Preview: Chicagoland Returns With a Loaded O'Reilly Field

Chicagoland Speedway is back on the NASCAR map, and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series gets the first national-series shot at the 1.5-mile oval. Saturday's Cuervo 300 is not just another intermediate race in the middle of summer. It is NASCAR's return to Joliet for the first time since 2019, wrapped into an Independence Day weekend that gives the old place a real event feel again.

The entry list gives the race a strong opening hook. Connor Zilisch is in the No. 1 for JR Motorsports. Chase Elliott is in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports entry. Cole Custer, Carson Kvapil, Rajah Caruth, Nick Sanchez, Austin Hill, Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier and Sam Mayer are all part of a 38-car field with no one going home. That is a lot of quality for a track where clean air, restart lanes and long-run balance can make a mid-pack starting spot feel like a problem by the end of Stage 1.

Chicagoland is a 1.5-mile tri-oval, but it has never raced like a sterile mile-and-a-half. The surface has age in it, the groove can widen, and drivers who are comfortable running inches from the wall can create speed after the first run burns off. That matters for the O'Reilly regulars. Allgaier, Hill and Love have enough intermediate-track discipline to turn the race into a points day even if a Cup cameo has the rawest car. Kvapil and Zilisch bring the JR Motorsports ceiling. Elliott brings the obvious Cup skill and a Hendrick car that should be judged hard after practice.

The tire note is worth paying attention to. The O'Reilly cars will run a right-side tire that debuted at Charlotte in May, paired with a left-side tire used earlier this season, including Nashville. That sounds like a normal technical line until the race gets into green-flag rhythm. Charlotte and Nashville both reward drivers who can keep the right rear alive without giving up too much entry speed. Chicagoland should ask the same question, only with more unknowns because the series has not raced here in seven years.

Connor Zilisch is the highest-ceiling series regular in the field. His road-course wins get the headlines, but the JR Motorsports speed is not limited to one track type.

Chase Elliott is the Cup name that changes the race. If the No. 88 unloads near the front, he becomes both a win threat and a lineup anchor.

Justin Allgaier is the steady veteran play. Chicagoland should reward long-run feel, and Allgaier is usually at his best when the race asks for patience instead of one-lap heroics.

Austin Hill and Jesse Love give Richard Childress Racing two ways into the race. Hill is the restart-and-track-position threat; Love is the cleaner upside play if the car has speed over a full run.

Race winner: Connor Zilisch - The market will have to respect Elliott, but Zilisch has enough outright speed and team strength to be the first name on the board if the price is reasonable.

Top five: Justin Allgaier - This is the kind of race where Allgaier can win without having the flashiest practice lap. A top-five ticket should be live if his car has long-run balance.

Long shot: Rajah Caruth - Caruth's entry is one of the more interesting non-obvious names on the list. On a return weekend with limited recent track data, a clean race can beat expectation quickly.

Build this slate after practice, not before it. Chicagoland should give us enough tire-falloff signal in practice to separate pure qualifying speed from race pace. If the top Cup/JRM names are correctly priced, the winning FantasyJolt lineup likely needs one salary saver from the intermediate-track regulars rather than five obvious favorites.
