Day Wins Charlotte with Three-Wide Late Pass

Monday, October 12, 2026

Corey Day overcame a pit-road penalty and passed Jesse Love and Justin Allgaier to win Charlotte's rain-postponed Blue Cross NC 300.

Race Summary

Corey Day turned a late setback into the winning move Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, driving beneath Jesse Love and Justin Allgaier in a three-wide battle to take the Blue Cross NC 300. Day held off Love by 0.728 seconds to earn consecutive O'Reilly Auto Parts Series victories following his Las Vegas success. His fourth win of the season brought him within seven points of the championship lead. A night that included a trip to the rear of the field ended with the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet back in Victory Lane.

Rain moved the race from Saturday to Sunday evening and canceled practice and qualifying. The metric lineup put Carson Kvapil on pole alongside Day. Day took control early and won the first stage, but a penalty for crossing too many pit stalls during the break undid that track position. He had to work forward again while Love and Allgaier disputed the lead. Allgaier won the second stage ahead of Love and Taylor Gray; Day recovered to seventh by the break, keeping his race alive rather than letting the penalty decide it.

Allgaier appeared to have the advantage late before contact with the outside wall allowed Love and Day through. Brent Crews' subsequent crash brought the final caution and another restart. Day briefly fell behind both rivals before finding room underneath their battle on the backstretch. Love remained close enough to keep the outcome unsettled, but could not complete a return pass. The last run demanded more than one successful restart: Day also had to hold the position against a driver who had led much of the evening.

Sheldon Creed finished third, ahead of Allgaier and Carson Brown. Brandon Jones, Austin Hill, Anthony Alfredo, Gray and Brennan Poole completed the top ten. Creed retained the points lead, with Love two points behind and Day seven back. Those narrow gaps contrasted with Kvapil's night: the pole starter suffered tire trouble and finished 32nd. Charlotte rewarded recovery from one kind of adversity while showing how quickly another could remove a contender from the lead battle.

Key Takeaways

Day's Recovery Kept the Winning Opportunity Open

The penalty separated the fastest part of Day's opening run from the hardest part of his night. Winning Stage 1 had demonstrated his pace, but the restart from the back required him to spend that speed getting through traffic. NASCAR's report placed him 30th for the Lap 54 restart. His seventh place at the next stage break represented a substantial recovery before the decisive late racing began.

Day credited his team's execution and the strength of his car after the finish. The comeback mattered because his final move would have been unavailable had he remained buried behind the leaders. It was not a clean, uninterrupted march from a front-row start to victory. He lost position through his own pit-road mistake, recovered it on track, and still had enough performance left to challenge when the race offered one last opening.

Allgaier and Love Had Speed Without the Final Result

Allgaier's second-stage victory made him a central figure long before the final restart. Racing News described his move around Love for the lead during that segment and another challenge for the top spot in the final stage. That repeated contest helps explain why the closing battle involved familiar opponents rather than an unexpected new challenger. The leading cars had been testing one another over multiple runs.

The wall contact changed the order when Allgaier could least afford it. Fourth was still a strong finish, but it did not capture the opportunity he had held while leading. Love faced a different problem after Day's pass: staying close did not provide enough room to get back ahead. His runner-up finish protected his championship position while leaving the victory just out of reach. For both drivers, the result was productive without being the result their late-race positions had promised.

The Championship Contenders Had Very Different Nights

Creed recovered from early contact and a slow stop to protect the series lead with third. Brown's fifth-place finish added another storyline outside the championship battle, giving Jordan Anderson Racing a place among the front-running finishers. Frontstretch highlighted both the leader's recovery and Brown's result in its account of the night.

Farther back, the inspected order shows how little the pole guaranteed Kvapil. His 32nd-place finish put him behind several cars that had started with fewer expectations of reaching the front. Mayer was classified 24th, Crews 30th and Rajah Caruth 36th. Those results were not interchangeable with the top-five finishes earned by Creed, Love, Day and Allgaier. With four races remaining, the opportunity to recover exists, but Charlotte left the contenders pursuing it from very different positions.

Fantasy Recap

Day's stage victory and Love's two second-place stage finishes strengthened their FantasyJolt returns beyond their finishing positions alone. Allgaier also collected the second-stage win. Those contributions explain why the final-order table is only part of the scoring picture: time leading and stage results matter alongside the finish. Love earned the single fastest-green-flag-lap bonus with a 30.442-second lap on Lap 55, not a bonus for every lap on which he was quickest.

The legal combination below uses the actual race salaries, five drivers and the $50 limit. Higher base scorers receive the larger A-through-E multipliers, making roster order part of the calculation. There are no place-differential points added to this FantasyJolt total, even when a driver makes substantial progress from the starting grid.

This is the highest-scoring hindsight lineup, calculated after the race. It is not a forecast, a submitted team or an assertion that the combination was identifiable beforehand. Budget balance and multiplier placement are evaluated together rather than treating the five best finishing positions as an automatically legal roster.

Looking Ahead

The series moves to Phoenix Raceway for the Timberland PRO 200 on Saturday, October 17. Love and Day arrive within seven points of Creed, leaving the title fight closely packed at the front. Charlotte's win gives Day momentum, but not the championship lead.
